Right-angle weave and crystals fullfill your dreams

Judi Mullins

My friend, Cheryl Swanda, owner of My Tyme Beads in Tigard, OR, and I were bemoaning the fact that we would probably never own a tennis bracelet. She suggested that we make bracelets out of Austrian crystals, and I thought about using them for beadweaving. The bicone shape doesn't lend itself well to beadweaving. Thinking about the shape, I tried mentally to fit it into different stitches. When I hit right-angle weave, I knew I'd hit on something good. I drew some sketches and showed them to Cheryl, who dropped crystals in my hand and sent me home. The crystals took to right-angle weave better than I'd expected. Their bicone backsides meshed with each other perfectly. I stitched until I'd woven all the crystals into a fabric. It was beautiful but lacked something. Those of you who design jewelry know the importance of spacer beads. They give the eye a place to rest. Out came my bead stash to find the perfect spacer bead - some 14kt gold-plated seed beads. As I wove them into the fabric, it changed before my eyes.
